Recently, my husband and son went fishing for the weekend; my daughter, who works in the children's department of our local library, was on the Saturday schedule and had to work the entire day. Which meant I had a very quiet afternoon all to myself...and I enjoyed it to the fullest. After grabbing my favorite teapot and my beautiful magnolia teacup, I brewed a pot of Earl Grey (my absolute favorite tea ever); while I sipped the pungent, aromatic brew, I watched one of my favorite movies of all-time...Penny Serenade.
Penny Serenade, starring Cary Grant and Irene Dunne, is from 1941, and it is a real tearjerker. For me, the tearjerker of all tearjerkers is Madame X, but Penny Serenade is a pretty close second. It had been nearly a year since I had last seen this sweet and tender movie, which comes in at about #4 or 5 on my all-time favorites list, and I felt like a "Penny Serenade Tea Party" would be a great way to enjoy some "me time." Read my review of this lovely film HERE.
It's not often that I take a long, lazy afternoon; then again, it's not often that the house is totally quiet and someone is not in need of something. So, without any guilt whatsoever, I enjoyed my classic movie tea party.
For those who haven't ever seen this film, definitely look for it. It's out on DVD and should be easy to track down. It's also available on You Tube. Not only is it a lovely, tender, touching film, but I think it is one of the best performances of Cary Grant's career. He plays paternal here, instead of the usual romantic ladies' man...and I think he does it beautifully. Add in Earl Grey tea in a beautiful teacup and you've got a perfect afternoon.
Happy viewing!!!
Classic movies are not just antiquated films from a bygone era...rather, they are beautiful, well-acted, well-written gems that ought not to fade into obscurity. Truly, Hollywood just doesn't make 'em like they used to!!! I hope you'll discover some must-sees by your visit here.
