As I recently shared, last Thursday I had an opportunity to see the film Casablanca at Boise's historic Egyptian Theatre. Though the screening was at a historic theatre, ticket prices were not much different than what you would pay at the cinema---$9 in advance and $11 at the door.
The film's screening was sponsored by Boise Classic Movies, a group which I never even knew existed until last Saturday. On my way to lunch at a downtown pizzeria, I walked by the Egyptian, and this poster caught my eye.
Loving Casablanca as I do, I visited the Boise Classic Movie website at my very first opportunity, and I discovered that they screen a movie at the Egyptian at least once a month. In October, they showed Psycho, and back in August, they showed Rear Window. Can you imagine those films not only on the big screen but in a historic theatre?!
Here's the way it works...suggestions are made for movies for a certain month. I suggested An Affair to Remember for February (romance). The top 5 suggestions get put to a vote, and the film getting the most votes is the film they show. An Affair to Remember is up with Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, Wuthering Heights, and The Way We Were for the February showing. I, of course, cast my vote for An Affair to Remember...only one vote per email address.
After the month's showing is chosen, tickets go on sale. They have to reach 200 sales, which they call the "tipping point," or else the showing is off. If they don't reach at least 200 sales, they can't afford to rent the theatre and show the film. So far, in the several months the group has been in existence, the only showing which hasn't "tipped" has been their 3-film Halloween fest.
Four movies are scheduled to show between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I am interested in seeing only one of them...White Christmas, which, providing it reaches the "tipping point," will show on November 27th. Any of y'all want to come with me?
This ingenious, yet simple, idea might be something any number of you might want to organize in your own cities...even if there is not a historic movie theatre nearby. For more information, visit the Boise Classic Movie website (HERE).
Classic movies are not just antiquated films from a bygone era...rather, they are beautiful, well-acted, well-written gems that ought not to fade into obscurity. Truly, Hollywood just doesn't make 'em like they used to!!! I hope you'll discover some must-sees by your visit here.

Wow, what a cool monthly event! I saw Casablanca in the theatre last year as part of its anniversary and it was fantastic seeing it on the big screen. I'd love to see some of these old movies in the theatre every month.
ReplyDeleteEileen, as you probably remember, I saw Casablanca on the big screen back in March as well. Seeing that beloved film that way made it more awesome than ever; however, I have to admit, seeing it on the big screen in a historic theatre even improved upon that. I was quite overwhelmed by the experience, and I was much more teary-eyed in the film than I usually am.
DeleteI am so hoping An Affair to Remember is chosen as the February film. Can you imagine Cary on the big screen?!
